Urban Park Design
A striking urban park design that transforms a neglected city space into a vibrant, multi-functional landmark. Embassy Park is a bold intervention of modernity, sustainability, and community connection in the heart of Waltham.
Embassy Park: A Landmark in Urban Park Design
At Concept Landscape Architects, our approach to urban park design is rooted in the idea that public space should do more than serve — it should inspire. Embassy Park, located in the heart of Waltham, is a bold statement of civic ambition, social inclusion, and urban renewal. This forward-thinking design reimagines a previously underused and fragmented site as a vibrant public destination that challenges the conventional and signals meaningful change.
The park’s most defining feature is its intersecting diagonal lines, which cut decisively across both the ground plane and adjacent building elevations. These dynamic geometries contrast starkly with the conservative surrounding architecture, creating a sense of motion, transition, and energy. They embody a progressive identity for the area — one that reflects growth, diversity, and creative placemaking.
Catalyst for Social Engagement and Economic Revival
Embassy Park is more than a green space; it functions as a multi-use civic venue. Modern canopy pavilions provide shelter and shade for flexible programming, including informal meetings, artisan markets, food stalls, and cultural pop-ups. A sunken amphitheatre at the heart of the site doubles as a public performance space and a calm retreat — fostering both activation and contemplation.
The integration of green walls onto elevations and fencing supports biodiversity, contributes to urban cooling, and reinforces the message of environmental responsibility. These features directly respond to guidance from the
Green Infrastructure Framework, which highlights the importance of climate-responsive design in urban environments.
Materiality and Design Detailing
Our material palette is deliberately high-spec, reflecting the park’s role as a flagship civic project. Corten-style metals, black granite, engineered timber, and textured concrete were selected for durability, contrast, and cohesion with both new and old elements. Feature lighting is integrated into seating, totems, and pathways, ensuring safety and atmosphere after dark.
Planting focuses on resilient urban species. Betula jacquemontii (Himalayan birch) was chosen for its reflective bark and soft canopy, while ground-level species support pollinators and year-round interest. These choices echo recommendations from the
Design Council’s Healthy Placemaking guide, which advocates for green spaces that improve wellbeing, air quality, and urban legibility.
Connected Public Realm and Walkable Cities
The paving patterns of Embassy Park stretch beyond the boundary, creating seamless movement between the park and adjacent landmarks such as the Embassy Theatre and Moody Street Crossing. This enhances legibility and encourages pedestrian activity — a principle outlined in public realm best practice from the
Landscape Institute, where permeability and user-focused wayfinding are seen as critical to effective urban spaces.
Wayfinding elements include tall, sculptural totem columns which serve a triple function: signage, lighting, and digital/local advertising. These columns generate modest revenue for the local authority while helping orient users and animate the park both day and night.
A Cultural Anchor and Community Platform
Embassy Park is intentionally framed as a cultural platform as much as a recreational space. Public art opportunities are embedded throughout — from sculptural features to potential mural walls and rotating installations. The layout is designed to support spontaneous activity, user-defined events, and programmed cultural moments. This is key to creating spaces that feel owned by their community, not just designed for them — an ethos echoed in
CABE’s Urban Green Nation report, which calls for open spaces that promote equity, creativity, and shared identity.
Embassy Park is not just a space to pass through — it’s a place to pause, connect, and belong. It brings forward a strong and coherent visual language, a practical functionality, and a deep social and environmental purpose. For Waltham, it represents the arrival of something new: a contemporary urban park design that sets the tone for future regeneration.
