Our Design Process

We begin by immersing ourselves in your goals, taste, and lifestyle requirements. Through site meetings and client consultations, we explore how your outdoor space can best serve you, be it for family use, entertaining, biodiversity, or visual impact.

For estates, we consider the broader narrative: connections between zones, views, entrances, privacy, heritage trees, and service areas. For smaller private gardens, we focus on space-making, flow, and detail.

We listen carefully to understand your priorities and collaborate to define a tailored design brief.

We go through a rigorous design process and as such can design for any style of theme, such as modern, contemporary, minimalist, traditional, formal, Victorian, and cottage garden, Zen Inspired i.,e, Japanese, Chinese, or Mediterranean dry climate style, nature-focused, family gardens, and those for entertaining.

We tailor every design to the client’s brief, providing creative leadership alongside technical support.

Agreed Design Scope and Contract Documentation

Once we understand your vision, we prepare a clear project scope and timeline, alongside detailed fee proposals. Our written agreement defines deliverables at each stage, helping avoid scope creep and keeping the project on track. We also outline any external approvals (such as planning or listed building consent) that may be required for implementation.

Site Survey & Site Analysis

We carry out or commission a topographic site survey, mapping levels, existing features, trees, buildings, and utilities. We analyse soil conditions, drainage, sun/shade patterns, and context, including adjacent properties, conservation constraints, or tree preservation orders (TPOs).  This is particularly vital in conservation areas or where planning permission is required. Our expertise in working with sensitive or protected landscapes ensures design feasibility from the outset.

Garden Design Concepts – Initial Sketches to Final Visuals

Initial Concept / Sketch Design

We produce loose concept drawings to test and refine spatial ideas. These explore layout, form, structure, and key features such as terraces, lawns, paths, seating, water, or sculptural elements.

Final Concept / 3D Design

Once the initial design is agreed, we create final visuals, including 2D plans and 3D renders where needed. This helps you visualise the finished space and provides clarity for stakeholders or planning officers if required.

Full Design Development

At this stage, we develop the scheme into detailed general arrangement drawings. We define precise dimensions, material palettes, surfacing, lighting, drainage, and levels. This ensures the design is technically sound and ready for costing or planning submission.

We’ve added value to numerous private garden design projects by refining layouts for better access, reduced maintenance, improved drainage, and increased biodiversity without compromising visual intent.

Planting Design – Right Plant, Right Place

We are passionate about horticulture and place great emphasis on planting design. Each planting plan considers soil conditions, microclimate, maintenance levels, and seasonal interest. We use the principle of “right plant, right place” to select combinations that are resilient, elegant, and ecologically beneficial.

We can work with estate gardeners or private maintenance teams to ensure long-term success.

Technical Design & Construction Details

We can produce detailed construction drawings, sections, and detailing for all hard and soft landscape elements. Examples include:

  • Retaining wall details and step profiles.
  • Bespoke Water feature mechanics and design.
  • Bespoke pergolas, summer houses or timberwork, fencing or boundary treatments.
  • Paving edge treatments, thresholds, and layouts.
  • Sub-base build-ups and surface water drainage systems.
  • Irrigation layouts, soakaways, or other sustainable design
  • Tree Pit and other soft landscape details

This documentation ensures accurate tendering and efficient site implementation.

Specification and Contracts

We prepare technical specifications that outline standards of workmanship and material quality. These form the basis for tendering and enable you to compare like-for-like contractor quotes.

If you require support with contractor appointment, we can assist with evaluation, pre-contract meetings, and even contract administration through to completion.
