Located in the heart of Central London on Mecklenburg Square WC1N, this project involved the transformation of an underutilised roof terrace and courtyard garden at Goodenough College. Our brief was to develop functional and attractive spaces that would enrich the campus setting while responding to practical constraints such as fire regulations, access requirements, and structural limitations. The project aimed to create a vibrant environment that not only meets the needs of students and visitors but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of the college. Roof Terrace Design

Previously unused, the roof terrace was reimagined as a calm and sociable outdoor space for students and guests. The design incorporated:

In designing the roof terrace, we considered various elements that contribute to a pleasant outdoor experience. For instance, the choice of powder-coated metal planters housing a variety of evergreen hedging and architectural shrubs not only provides a lush backdrop but also ensures year-round greenery, which is essential in an urban environment. These planters were strategically placed to create natural divisions within the space, encouraging social interaction while maintaining privacy. Additionally, we incorporated native plant species to support local biodiversity and reduce maintenance needs.

The result is a simple but elegant rooftop garden that fits seamlessly into the college’s historic surroundings.

The design of the roof terrace also includes environmental considerations. The utilisation of a resin-bound stone surface not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also improves drainage, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the roof structure. Furthermore, we included soft lighting that creates an inviting atmosphere during evening gatherings, allowing the space to be used for various events, from social meet-ups to quiet study sessions under the stars. This thoughtful approach ensures that the terrace serves as an extension of the indoor spaces, promoting overall well-being.

Furthermore, we prioritised improved boundary planting to create a lush green screen that mitigates noise pollution from the surrounding area, making the courtyard a serene retreat away from the urban hustle.
