Langdon Academy’s existing outdoor space had become outdated and underwhelming—a stark and worn landscape fabric that lacked the vibrancy and functionality needed to support the school’s evolving curriculum and growing student population. Serving as a key arterial route between faculty buildings, the area experienced high daily footfall, yet failed to offer students or staff any engaging or useful outdoor zones.

The aim of the project was to regenerate this vital part of the school campus, creating an attractive, robust and flexible urban landscape that could be enjoyed by the entire school community. The focus was not only on aesthetics but also on educational value, social interaction, and year-round usability.

A Multi-Layered Concept for Modern Educational Landscapes

Our landscape design concept introduced a layered strategy that responds directly to the site’s architectural context while delivering a dramatic visual and functional transformation.

A green layer of carefully selected specimen trees and shrubs introduces natural beauty, biodiversity and shade, while also helping to soften the scale of the surrounding buildings. These species were chosen for their resilience, seasonal interest, and low-maintenance characteristics—ideal for busy school environments.

To define space and circulation, we introduced walling, integrated seating, and raised planting beds, helping to guide student movement while offering places to gather, rest, and reflect. A variety of paving finishes and textures create a sense of hierarchy and spatial identity, forming different character zones suitable for a range of activities.

From casual meet-ups to outdoor dining and quiet study, the new landscape offers flexible spaces that can adapt to the needs of students throughout the day and across the school year.

Supporting Social Interaction, Wellbeing and Engagement

The new outdoor environment encourages positive social behaviour and provides valuable informal learning opportunities. It also promotes student wellbeing, which is a growing priority in school design and is supported by research from organisations like the Landscape Institute

The overall layout reduces anti-social behaviour hotspots, improves visibility and supervision, and ensures clear access routes across the campus.

We worked closely with the Academy’s leadership team, facilities managers and student groups to ensure the design met practical needs while remaining visually bold and educationally enriching.
