Elegant and sustainable landscape design for contemporary apartments in South London, combining urban greening, biodiversity, and high-quality residential amenity spaces by Concept Landscape Architects.

Landscape Design for South London Apartments

Enhancing Urban Living through Sustainable Landscape Architecture

The South London Apartments project exemplifies a carefully considered landscape design strategy for modern apartment living, developed by Concept Landscape Architects. Our role as landscape architects was to maximise spatial quality, integrate sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS), and create a welcoming outdoor environment that blends aesthetic appeal with ecological performance.

This residential development is located in a rapidly regenerating part of South London, where landscape architecture plays a vital role in increasing biodiversity, providing visual and acoustic buffers, and encouraging community interaction. Our design vision focused on sustainable planting, accessible outdoor spaces, and climate-resilient solutions tailored for urban living.

Key Objectives of the Landscape Design

  • Create a sense of place and identity through spatial structure and visual harmony.

  • Introduce layered planting and green buffers to soften the urban edge.

  • Provide attractive, usable private and communal outdoor spaces for residents.

  • Incorporate urban greening and low-maintenance planting palettes.

  • Support local biodiversity and pollinators with native and adapted species.

  • Integrate SuDS and permeable paving to manage rainfall sustainably.

Design Approach and Materials

Our landscape architecture team developed a site-responsive layout with a strong structural planting scheme, using multi-stemmed trees, evergreen shrubs, herbaceous borders, and ornamental grasses to create a seasonal tapestry of texture and colour.

The hard landscape used porcelain paving, timber screening, and raised corten steel planters to define semi-private zones while promoting a contemporary, high-end feel. We used subtle lighting strategies to support safe access and highlight key design features at night.

Privacy and permeability were balanced using green screens and climbing plants on trellises, ensuring residents have a buffer from adjacent properties without losing openness or daylight.

Sustainability and SuDS

Water management was a core component of this scheme. We integrated sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) through:

  • Permeable paving that reduces surface water runoff.

  • Rain gardens and planted swales to filter and slow water.

  • Subsurface attenuation crates are placed beneath soft landscaping areas.

These measures align with the guidance of the London Sustainable Drainage Action Plan and DEFRA’s non-statutory SuDS standards, contributing to a resilient landscape that performs under pressure.

Planting for Ecology and Wellbeing

The planting design featured a pollinator-friendly mix of native and ornamental species, such as:

  • Lavandula angustifolia, Salvia nemorosa, and Verbena bonariensis for summer colour.

  • Evergreen structure from Sarcococca, Skimmia, and Elaeagnus.

  • Multi-stem trees such as Amelanchier and Betula for scale and texture.

These choices support the Urban Greening Factor standards promoted by the Greater London Authority (GLA) and improve local air quality, biodiversity, and resident wellbeing.

Delivering Quality in Detail

  • Clear pedestrian routes with contrasting surface textures to aid navigation and accessibility.

  • Integrated bike storage, bin screening, and utility structures within a coherent visual language.

  • Attention to maintenance regimes for long-term performance and visual integrity.

Our landscape design for apartment developments addresses not only aesthetics but also how people live, interact, and relax in their outdoor spaces. The result is a visually rich and resilient environment that aligns with current best practices in urban landscape architecture.
