Suburb Garden

Studio Concept Landscape Architects were asked to design a new front and rear garden space for a family house in Hampstead Garden Suburb, North London. The house in located within a conservation area and the existing  3  large copper beech trees needed to be protected and considered in the overall scheme.  The Front arrival space was flat, lacked any definition and was in a state of disrepair. The rear garden was also un-maintained and the lawn area was sloping and out of sequence.

The solutions for the front garden were to raise the garden borders and lawn so they defined the space. The use of the granite stone setts helped lighten and lift the overall feel and give a modern overtone.  Specimen shrubs, some in pots and some in the borders helped create rhythm and juxtapose with the existing privet hedge.  The rear garden space benefited from a raised terrace area that stepped down to a lower grass lawn. The terrace was surrounded by exotic type planting, bamboos, yuccas, phormium and had areas defined for bbq  and dining as well as lounging and sitting. The lower garden space centered on a bespoke play structure for the family’s chidren  that became a sculptural and artistic item.  The side border on the lower terrace was retained using sawn timber sleepers and a contemporary pergola structure covers an inbuilt seating area to make something of this otherwise functional design feature.

The planting surrounding the grass was lush and soft using a mix of evergreen and low maintenance shrubs with some colorful specimens to offset the backdrop. Click the photos to enlarge and start a slideshow.
