What are the main benefits of a garden design?

Garden design can practically and creatively transform your garden into a valued recourse that could improve your lifestyle and value of your property. That right, the investment could be returned financially due to the added saleability and attractiveness of the exterior spaces, not to mention the enjoyment it would bring to your life.  Gardens come in all shapes and size and most clients are looking for some inspiration and professional help to aid them in the process.  A well designed garden can be enjoyed and viewed on many levels such as for recreation, entertainment, dining, relaxing, holding events, wildlife and biodiversity, sustainability, sculpture and art, and just the sheer beauty of the garden design elements. A good designer will be connected with several good contractors and suppliers and this knowledge becomes extremely beneficial to the client as it incorporates high quality materials and skilled workmanship to ensure a well built and delivered project.  A design will enable to the client to (tender) approach several contractors thus receiving a range of quotes and increase the competitiveness of those quotes (as contractors know they are competing) and place the power into the hands of the client in determining who offers the best available service.

Typical Garden Design Process

Intial Brief, Concept Garden Design Stage

A garden design will attempt to understand the client briefs and requirements within the parameters of a financial budget. The skill of the garden designer is to interpret that brief and intelligently use the right mix of landscape elements into a concept presentation.  At this presentation the client might expect  coloured plans, sections, elevations, 3d visualisation and mood boards that help properly communicate and demonstrate how the design is put together and what they might expect.  This client then has to approve which elements they, like, dislike and comment on if there is something they would like to see in addition. These comments provide a route to a finished working layout plan which then forms the base of the detail design stage.

Detail Design Stage

Following on from the Concept Stage, the detail design provides the clarity and final specification to the scheme. The Garden designer or Landscape Architect will need to use his technical knowledge and skills to draw out and detail all the elements of the project.  Just like designing a house or any building, a garden needs to be broken down into the different elements and areas using drawings and schedules.  The detail enable  landscape contractors to price the scheme accurately and provides an exact template of how the garden design should be built and how much work is involved.
