Studio Concept Landsape Archietcts and Urban Designers relished the challenge to transform this forgotten and underused urban space in a suburb of Boston, USA. Embassy park is in the center of town and acts as a meeting point and route from the main high street to the retail area and theatre beyond. After considering different options and styles, our concept creates a modern urban space that is usable and functional for the local community – but also visually stimulating, challenging to the senses and a local land mark to drive the local economy by encouraging visitors to town.
Our design theme is based from an abstract grid that links, extends, and then defines individual spaces and areas. They are formed into hard and soft landscape elements and encompasses both the horizontal and vertical plains. Consequently the existing wall surfaces are clad in a robust and modern materials such as metallic cladding that is juxtaposed next too irrigated green walls panels. The three individually styled canopy shelters are used on a day to day basis for socialising, relaxation and meetings. Ina commercial aspect they are hired out and programmed throughout the year for exhibitions and displays, market and craft fairs, meetings and talks, local and regional events.
A sunken amphitheatre act as a central focus for impromptu performances and are complimented by two water features designed as triangular blocks that rise out the ground plane. Raised planter walls act as informal seating and raised lawns are accessible for lounging and socialising. Specimen trees weave through the park creating rhythm, shade and natural cooling. Multifunctional totem information signs are located at either end of the park defining the entrances and creating an opportunity for advertising and local notices.
